How to Start a Skincare Routine? 5 Stages of Skincare
Taking care of your skin should be one of the most pleasant moments of your day! After all, it is a time when you can quiet down and relax, spend some time alone with yourself, and do something just for you. That is why almost all of us have our own unique beauty habits and clever solutions for daily facial skincare. Many of us are happy to share them, serving as a great source of inspiration for others.
However, such a vast amount of information can sometimes be overwhelming. In the maze of advice, it is easy to feel lost. As a result, skincare can start to feel like a burden, discouraging us from taking action and causing more problems instead of bringing joy. Are we really doing everything right?
Fortunately, if you want to start taking care of your facial skin, there are a few universal rules worth following. They will help you stay relaxed and leave your skin beautiful and radiant. Especially for you, we have prepared a few tips on how to start taking care of your complexion step by step, doing it correctly and without unnecessary worries!
Prepare yourself mentally to enjoy taking care of your skin
If you want your skin to be beautiful, well-nourished, and cared for, take a comprehensive approach to the subject!
Don't just think about cosmetics, steps, and skincare routines, but also, and most importantly, think about yourself. Skincare is for you, not you for skincare! You shouldn't stress or worry that you are doing something wrong or not implementing all the stages of care right away. That approach won't lead to anything good, and you will surround yourself with negative energy. Remember, it's better to do anything for yourself than nothing at all. Using the small steps method, you will master everything to perfection!
How to start taking care of your skin step by step? First, think about yourself and your needs! Care for your skin with pleasure, with attention to your health, natural beauty, and well-being. Then everything will fall into place. Trust us. This is the most important point when you are just starting your adventure with facial care. Why? Because you are the most important person here. Sometimes it just takes a little time and systematizing your knowledge to understand yourself, your needs, and your skin.
Make skincare something you associate with pure pleasure! Then it will be easier for you to approach it systematically and with curiosity, rather than as a chore. Before you get to work, talk to yourself for a moment. Say something nice. Think about what you are grateful for today. Recall a pleasant moment from the day. Prepare a drink that will relax and hydrate you, such as green tea. Put on your favorite song or spray a little perfume. Prepare a beautiful outfit for the start of the day or comfortable pajamas to jump into after your evening skincare routine!
Facial skincare in 5 stages

To start, you'll need a bit of knowledge. We're here to help with that. But don't worry—skincare isn't hard! We'll provide you with a handful of interesting tips on how to care for your skin and what cosmetics you should use for this purpose. To best care for your skin, it's worth implementing 5 stages of care into your daily plan, consisting of:
- Cleansing (one- or two-step; for this purpose, a cleansing oil or face wash gel will work well)
- Toning (you'll need a face toner or a toner-essence)
- Care (serums and creams will be helpful)
- Protection (don't forget about sun and urban protection)
- And additional treatments (the kings of relaxation: masks, exfoliators, and other treatments).
Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. If you are just starting to take an interest in conscious skincare, use the small steps method and don't introduce too many products at once. At the beginning, focus on the first three stages of care. These will guarantee the best and fastest results. They will help you build a minimalist and extremely effective skincare plan, also known as a skincare routine. When you feel more confident, add sun protection to your routine. And when you decide it's high time to take your care to the next level, expand it with additional treatments!
Stage 1. Cleansing.

Skin cleansing should be the foundation of every routine. This is a stage of care that is not worth skipping, regardless of whether you are just starting your journey or have been caring for your skin for a long time. Why is washing your skin so important? Impurities accumulate on our complexion every day. Some are our own doing (makeup, SPF, cosmetic residue), and some are independent of us (dust, smog, excess sebum, dead skin cells, and other pollutants). Dirty skin is not pleasant. Your pores get clogged, and you make it harder for your skin to function. Therefore, try to wash your face morning and evening. How to cleanse your skin? You can do it in one or two steps.
Single-step cleansing works well in the morning and in the evening on days when you haven't applied sunscreen or makeup. Choose a face wash gel based on mild cleansing agents. Gently massage the face wash gel into damp skin, then rinse everything with lukewarm or cool water. Hot water unnecessarily dilates blood vessels, while cold water will help you constrict them. This way, your pores will look better.
Two-step cleansing works well in the evening on days when you applied cosmetics that are hard to remove, such as SPF cream or makeup. In this case, the first stage is makeup removal. If you want your skin to be thoroughly cleansed while still being treated gently, use a cleansing oil. It will remove all dirt from your skin, including waterproof makeup, while leaving the skin supple and hydrated. The second stage is the actual washing, which looks exactly the same as in the case of single-step cleansing. Reach for the same wash gel you used in the morning and enjoy clean, well-cared-for skin.
Stage 2. Toning.

Skin toning is an important, though often trivialized and underestimated, stage of care. To perform it, you only need a face toner. We recommend choosing a cotton-pad-free product, such as a spray toner. With this application, using the cosmetic is extremely simple: just spray it on your face after cleansing the skin. Both in the morning and in the evening. You won't generate unnecessary waste or expose your skin to unnecessary rubbing and pulling with a cotton pad.
A face toner is designed to restore the skin's proper pH. It may sound trivial, but the correct skin pH affects the integrity of the stratum corneum, which translates into its defense against microbes. It is also worth remembering that skin moistened with toner better absorbs active ingredients from the skincare products applied in the following steps, thereby enhancing their effect. Additionally, if you choose a richer toner-essence formula, you will sneak many valuable active substances into your routine.
Restore harmony to your skin with a toner and enjoy its additional skincare benefits.
Stage 3. Care.

The foundation of any skincare routine is hydration. To maintain the skin's healthy state, proper water management must be maintained. Skin that is insufficiently hydrated and dehydrated loses its elasticity and smoothness, begins to sag, and becomes excessively dry. Water loss in the tissues is a cause of skin aging. Appropriate serums and creams restore the skin's proper moisture and enable its maintenance.
In the morning, opt for light formulas. If you will be applying makeup or SPF cream during the day, it is worth applying nourishing products underneath: a face serum in gel or water form (leave oily textures for the evening!) or a light moisturizing cream, e.g., in the form of a cream-gel, emulsion, or lotion. Match the cosmetic to your skin's needs by reaching for a brightening, soothing, or regulating formula. It is worth ensuring that your morning cosmetic is enriched with antioxidants (which will strengthen the effect of the UV filter cream) and plant-based anti-pollution and anti-blue light raw materials. Thanks to this, your skin will be protected from atmospheric factors and the direct deposition of dust, grime, and civilizational or digital pollutants. You can also leave your skin "naked" (using only a light cream, just SPF cream, or nothing at all) as long as its condition allows for it.
In the evening, you can go a bit wilder. Focus on hydration, regeneration, reconstruction, strengthening, and soothing your skin! Choose a slightly richer cream—it doesn't have to be heavy or greasy—that will act like a soothing patch on your skin. The right cream will help you "repair" the damage your skin had to face all day. It will regulate, hydrate, calm, soothe red and irritated skin, and support its reconstruction. If your skin needs it, especially in the autumn-winter period, you can support it in the evening by applying an oil serum under the cream. The creamwill take care of your skin overnight so that in the morning you can enjoy the effect of a radiant and hydrated complexion.
Stage 4. Protection.

Skin protection is a topic that was heavily neglected and trivialized for many years. Except, perhaps, for moments when we went to the beach. Unjustly so, because protection against solar radiation and urban pollutants is very important.
UVA and UVB radiation negatively affect the condition of the skin: they accelerate aging, cause redness and erythema, excessive dryness, and even contribute to the development of cancerous changes. Meanwhile, smog and its small particles cause various types of skin damage, drying it out and clogging it, leading to inflammation.
An SPF cream will help protect your skin by preventing sun damage and the formation of oxidative stress. Additionally, it will prevent sun discoloration from appearing on your skin or significantly limit this phenomenon. And your skin will retain its youthful appearance for longer. It is worth including cosmetics with a sun barrier in your daily morning routine. Of course, we do not apply UV filter cream at night!
However, that's not all when it comes to skin protection. It is worth protecting it not only from UVA and UVB radiation but also from so-called urban stress, i.e., civilizational pollutants. Pollutants in the air, such as smog, smoke, dust, and exhaust fumes, are very harmful to our skin, worsening its condition. Even if you are a city dweller, your skin isn't necessarily a fan of the urban climate. Therefore, as we mentioned earlier, it is worth looking for anti-pollution and antioxidant ingredients in your daily cream and serum to create a barrier protecting your skin.
Makeup also creates a delicate protective layer on the skin. You don't have to be afraid of it. If applying makeup gives you pleasure, do it! Remember, however, that even if a foundation has an SPF rating, it will not provide full protection. Therefore, it is best to first apply a nourishing serum, then a standard SPF product, and finally your makeup.
Stage 5. Additional Skincare Treatments

While you should remember the other stages of care every day if possible (please don't go to sleep with makeup on!), additional skincare treatments are... additional, and sometimes it's better to skip them! Of course, it's good to perform them systematically and regularly, but at intervals appropriate for the skin. Such treatments can be very valuable for your skin, and can even have a beneficial effect, but used in excess, they can also harm it. We are, of course, talking about exfoliators and masks.
An exfoliator (peeling) is a cosmetic treatment that, simply put, improves the appearance of your skin through exfoliation. It will help you eliminate skin imperfections. It will ensure your pores are unclogged and thoroughly cleansed; you'll get rid of dry skin patches and a dull complexion, as well as excess sebum and dead skin cells. Exfoliation can help you regulate the skin. It will smooth wrinkles and stimulate the skin to renew itself. However, if you use them too often, you will disrupt the natural skin exfoliation process. Therefore, choose the right type of exfoliator for your skin and don't do it too often!
Masks are cosmetics that not only have a beneficial effect on the complexion but also on the soul! They incredibly improve the mood and are a great form of relaxation. They are the icing on the cake of skincare. You can reach for sheet masks, rich creams, or peel-off algal and clay masks. You have a choice of cleansing, lifting, brightening, strengthening products, and many, many more! They will complement your routine, boosting it to the max and responding to the current needs of your skin. Masks are generally very concentrated cosmetics. Treat them as an additional injection of nutrients! Apply a mask before a big night out and to improve your well-being and skin condition!
